How to Take Care of Your Indoor Plants?

It’s always nice to see plants indoors. All these pictures on Instagram seem to create that kind of relaxing effect. That always happens when we see other people doing something. Especially if they’re good at it and if it looks good. And when it comes to plants, it always looks attractive when people know what they’re doing. That may seem hard at first, but it isn’t. All you have to do is to find some plants that you like and start. You’ll learn as you go and it will be a fun process.

Research

The first step, of course, is to choose your plants and research. Take a look around or on social media and check out other people’s plants. Find a few of them that you like and that you might want to have. Once you have that list, do your research. The first thing that you need to look for is if these plants can even grow indoors. And if you’ve seen them on other people’s pictures indoors, they probably can. But you should check that out just in case. You don’t want to get disappointed in the end. You want to research how much these plants can grow and how you should maintain them. If the plant is easy to maintain and can grow indoors, you’ve found the perfect plant. And the good news is that there are plenty of perfect plants out there.

Choose the Right Pot

This is a no-brainer move and it’s one of the main reasons research is so important. You need to know everything about the plant. Not only because you should know how to maintain it, but also to know how much the plant can grow. The last thing you want to do is to get that plant out of the soil and plant it again in a bigger pot. It’s very hard to do and it’s very unhealthy for the plant. You want to choose the right pot from the very beginning and avoid any kinds of problems down the road.

But if you choose to buy the plant instead of planting it by yourself, you’ll probably get the right pot with it. Unless, of course, the plant is too small and needs to be replanted. But it’s not a big deal when the plant is still young. It’s the perfect time to do it and to choose the right pot for it. So don’t wait until it’s too late and roots start growing.

Water Them Regularly

Here’s another no-brainer advice. But although it seems like a no-brainer, this is the one that many people seem to do wrong. Many people seem to water their plants too often, just in case the soil gets dry. But that’s genuinely not a good thing to do. And it’s yet another reason why you need to research first. You need to research because you want to know what your plants want.

Some plants need water every day, while others don’t need too much of it. Some plants are easier because they only need to be watered once every few weeks. But that also depends if you’re watering them during the summer or the winter. It might sound complicating and confusing if you’ve never done it before, but don’t let it discourage you. It’s exactly why you should start as soon as possible and learn along the way. Don’t wait until you learn everything. You’ll only get more confused and discouraged.

Don’t Exaggerate

If you exaggerate with watering, you’ll most likely damage the plant. Some plants may like to spend all their time in the water, but not all of them. To be more specific, the majority of plants don’t want that. Many plants start functioning the best when you water them and the soil gets dry. It’s the dry period that makes the plant grow and evolve. But again, even this isn’t the norm you should follow. You should research and find out everything you can about the plants that you are interested in. This is the only way for you to avoid potential mistakes and keep your plants alive. You shouldn’t exaggerate in anything.

Take a Closer Look

Now, when we say closer look, it doesn’t mean that you’ll need a magnifier glass. You’ll need to pay more attention to how your plants react to certain things that you do. You may find some information as you research, but you shouldn’t always count on that. You should also have an experience in real life and see if that information works. This is because you can never know who wrote these things on the internet. And you can never be sure if that person knows anything about the thing he or she writes about.

This is why it’s important to have that experience. For example, you need to take a closer look at your soil. Is it really dry or is it only on the surface? You can put a finger inside the soil so you can be sure. But be careful not to damage the roots or something like that. It may be different depending on the plant but still, be careful.

Add Fertilizer

Another thing many people seem to forget is to add fertilizer. It’s not something you need to do regularly and most plants won’t need too much of it. But you’ll need to add some of it to the soil so it adds up to your plants. It will make your plants evolve better and be healthier. Fertilizer will add all the nutrients that your plants need and help them grow. Now, of course, you need to research that as well. Some plants may not need fertilizer, but you probably won’t damage them if you add some. It adds nutrients to the plant after all. But you shouldn’t waste the fertilizer that you can use for other plants that might need it.

Make Sure That Your Plant Has Enough Light

This is another important thing that you should pay attention to. And it’s yet another thing that’s different for each plant. If you think that it gets even more confusing right now, don’t worry. It’s not hard to learn and it’s very simple to understand. And you’ll get into it very fast and understand it. It’s not very hard to understand which plant wants more sun and which one doesn’t. Some plants enjoy being exposed to the sun and they want to have more of it. The more time they spend in direct sunlight, the better off they will be. You probably have at least one plant on your mind that you know fits into this category. Cactus? Exactly.

But Also Make Sure That It Doesn’t Get Too Much Light

Now, here’s another piece of advice from another point of view. Now we’re dealing with plants that may be damaged by direct sunlight. Some of them may not necessarily be damaged, but it’s not good for them as well. Many indoor plants, if not the majority of them, enjoy indirect sunlight and partial shade. This is how they function the best and it’s their ideal environment. Combine that with room temperature and the right amount of water and you’ll enjoy their company. They will grow at their best and evolve exactly as they do on the most attractive Instagram photo. All of a sudden, you’ll have the same environment from the feed right in front of you. You’ll enjoy beautiful plants and pleasing views in your home without having to open social media. And that is the main goal that we’re looking for.

Don’t Change the Pot Unless You Have To

This is something that we mentioned earlier. If you change the pot of your plant, you may damage the roots. This is the main reason why you should never do it. This applies, of course, unless you genuinely have to do it. But that doesn’t mean that you should do it only because you’ve found a prettier pot. You should only do it if the plant is overgrowing the pot so it can continue to evolve the way it should.

But if you’re planting the seed yourself, you should know that already. This is why you should pay attention and research before you plant. But if you’ve bought the plant that’s already in the small pot, you should replant it while it’s small. Don’t wait until it starts growing even more. If you want to change the pots so they can look better or fit your environment, do it while the plant is young.

Maintain Room Temperature

This is another thing that we mentioned before. This is the rule that applies to many plants. And when it comes to indoor plants, it will apply to the majority, if not all of them. Room temperature creates a perfect environment for indoor plants. And when the winter comes around and you need to turn up the heating, don’t worry. You only need to pay attention not to have them near the heater. And if you have a room that you don’t use that often, even better. You can put your plant in an empty room during the winter if you want to. And you won’t even have to water them that often during that time. That makes the entire process much easier during wintertime.
